Course Outline
This course is designed to expand student knowledge and skill in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The learning targets are improvement in all of the following language arts applications: Grammar and usage, composition in the major writing modes, reading comprehension, critical thinking, research, and speech. Strategies include vocabulary building, grammar lessons, critical reading, and rational reflection.
Students will read and develop analysis in these four modes of message communication:
Expository, Persuasive, Literary, and Speech. Moreover, students will develop voice and style within grammatical conventions through draft and revision process, as well as journaling.
Text: Prentice-Hall Literature (fiction and nonfiction)

Class Materials--Bring the following supplies to class every day!
Folder--Students will need to keep study materials and reading matter organized and accessible.
Notebook with perforated pages, allowing for in-class assignments to be submitted or saved:
--students will draft responses to literature, film, or speech;
--students will journal;
--students will take notes on reading matter and/or lecture;
--students will complete exercises in grammar/usage;
--students will compile a glossary of literary terms.
Ink Pens (Black or Blue only).
Optional: Highlighters. These may be used for annotating essays, articles, etc.
NOTE: All work must be in black or blue ink and paper must have a straight edge (loose leaf or separated by perforation). Failure to meet this form results in penalty of 20% of the task value.
ALSO NOTE: LATE WORK is only accepted one day past deadline. The penalty/deduction is 20%.
Grading Scale—Midterm Progress reports are issued to be delivered to parents at 4 ½ weeks mark of each Quarter, and Report Cards are issued at the end of each 9 weeks period/Quarter.

B 80-89
C 70-79
D 60-69
F 0-59
Modifications applied per Individual Education Plans, Gifted/Talented Program, and/or 504 Plan.
